The Annual Plant Sale

Updated: March 26, 2008.

April 26, 2008 - 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Quincy's Unitarian Church will hold its 36th Annual Plant, Book and Bake sale from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2008. Located at 16th and Hampshire Streets, this year's sale will feature an innovative re-arrangement of the book and plant sale areas. For the first time, the Church will have its recent addition available as part of the annual fund raising event.

People shopping for plants have been accustomed to going downstairs in the church. This year, the plants will be found in the new addition. As always, you will find a selection of Annual and Perennial Flowers, Garden Vegetables, House Plants, Hanging Baskets and Shrubs. Al Beck's heritage tomatoes will be featured. Jim and Dienna Drew, and Kim Tonozzi have been assembling this year's collection. Many of the plants for sale were divided from the gardens of members of the church. Traditional bedding plants are supplied by Holtschlag Florist.

In the past the books were displayed on shelving boards laid across the tops of the pews in the sanctuary. This year, the books will be downstairs where the plants were. The books are shelved in bookcases, library style, and arranged in categories, to make browsing the titles a more rewarding experience. Ridgley Pierson, Joe Conover, Kevin Ballard and Judy Crocker have been sorting out fiction, biography, self-help, cook-books, children's books, puzzles, and more.

As you move through the church from one area to the next, you will notice the aroma of something sweet, baking in the oven. In the Heritage Room, Lynn Mercurio, Leann Flanagan and Chris Wiewel have been stocking the bake sale with breads, pies, rolls, cakes, cookies, jellies and more. There will be an area where you can sit and savor a cup of coffee, a moment of conversation, and something very special from the bake sale.

The Unitarian Church's Plant Sale has been on Quincy's calendar each spring since 1972. Dave Ripper is serving as the Chairman of the Plant Sale Committee. You'll want to be there when he opens the doors promptly at 9:00 a.m.

We took some pictures during the Plant Sale in 2006, and we've prepared a slide show that we hope you might enjoy.

Tables Full of Baked Goods

In our Heritage Room, tables are filled with baked goods. On Friday evening, members and friends will begin bringing in cakes and breads, pies and cookies and jellies and jams. By 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, the space is simply filled to overflowing. And the baked goods are always the first to sell out.

Standing in Line in the Rain

People will be standing in line, even in the rain, waiting for our doors to open. After years of experience, the people of Quincy have learned to be right here, very early, on Plant Sale Saturday. It is the best chance they will have to get the best of the best.
